Q&A ELASTIC WAIST BACK PANTS

THE Q & A SERIES

How to Add an Elastic Waist Back to Pants

This week, we’re sharing a tutorial on how to add an elastic waist back to a pair of pants, a simple pattern adjustment that can transform both comfort and wearability. It is a technique that allows a garment to flex with your body and your life, rather than asking you to fit it exactly as it was originally made.

This tutorial, along with many other ways to customise and hack your pants patterns, can also be found in the Pants Design and Hack Kit, part of our Pants Making Series Bundle, available to purchase now.

Why add elastic to the back?

An elastic back waistband allows your garment to move with you. It creates flexibility through the waist while maintaining a clean finish at the front.

This can be particularly helpful if:

  • You want a more comfortable fit for everyday wear

  • Your measurements fluctuate

  • You’d prefer to remove a zip or button closure

  • You’re looking for a quicker, more approachable make

As you work through this tutorial, we invite you to think about where else a small shift might make a difference in your wardrobe. It might be adjusting a pattern you have already made, revisiting something that no longer feels quite right, or simply approaching your next project with a little more flexibility.

This is what Making, Again is all about. Not starting from scratch, but returning, refining, and staying open to change as your needs evolve.

If you would like to explore this further, we would love for you to join us in this month’s Making, Again experiment, Shifting. It is a space to reflect on how your body, your lifestyle and your making practice change over time, and to consider how your garments can shift alongside you.

Happy shifting,

Courtney & Emily
